Firstly and foremost you will need both the Players Handbook, and the Monster Manual. If you don't have BOTH of these then you are probably wasting your time. Infact if you don't even have the players handbook then what on earth are you doing reading this!
I cannot recommend strongly enough that you get hold of a copy of the How To Create a Monster document. This was first published in an issue of Dragon magazine, later included on the Dragon Annual CD in PDF format, and finally can now be downloaded from the Creature Catalog download section. You therefore have NO excuse. Get it, read it, digest it, and then read it again! Twice!
