Question 1

From Søren Tønder:

Hi i have a question for you
How do you make bot match levels
hope you know it cause i dont

Answer 1

Are we talking Unreal or Unreal Tournament (I'm guessing Unreal)

The main differences between a single player level and a multi-player level are as follows:
1) Lots of PlayerStarts - the more the merrier
2) PathNodes - placed to allow bots to move around the level, remeber to do a "Paths Define" before playing your level (found on the Lights tab of the Rebuild dialog box (F8)
3) The name, Deathmatch level usually start with DM, CTF levels with CTF, Domination levels with DOM, Darkmatch levels I think start with DK. e.g. DM-Mylevel. The game then knows what type of level they are and they should appear in the list when you try to play that type of level.

If you're still stuck then check out someone elses level - there are lots to try from say NaliCity ( www.planetunreal.com/nalicity ) and don't forget the links page on my web site.

Hope this helps.

Question 2

From Markus:

My name is Markus and I'm mailing from Germany. I'm beginning to create my own maps and still have some questions. When I accidentally entered your website and saw the screenshot of your map it reminded of the fact that I still don't know how to build an arch (using a texture like "door2b" from "ancient.utx" e.g.) which I can go through. I'd be very glad if you could tell me how to do that.

Thanx for your help.

Answer 2

Well, the way I did it was to make a very short cylinder, rotate it onto its
side, and then subtract it from the wall.
I don't know if any of the textures will fit, you may have to play around
with the cylinder (quashing it etc) before they go right.

- Followup - From RedEye(Co30)

I was just reading your Q and A section, the one about how to make a doorway fit one of the doorway textures. You probably already knew this, but you can load the texture into the 2D shape editor, then make your 2d shape to fit the doorway. This is also handy for making the "missing brick" effect by subtracting chunks out of wall and floor textures. Hopefully the visitors to your site will find this info useful.

Thanks for that Randy.

Question 3

From Thomas Law

Well! played it....loved it!....all games should run on this engine........

BUT how the hell do you apply one of these wonderful skins to a bot or my character?????
No obvious references......

HELP.....

Answer 3

I'm guessing Unreal Tournament here so correct me if I'm wrong..

If you cannot choose the skin from within Player Setup then its possible you
need to add the package (the <skin>.u file put into the system directory) to
your system packages in your ini file.

For example the first line in my unrealtournament.ini file starting with
ServerPackage reads:
ServerPackages=SoldierSkins

Add a new line with the skin package name replacing SoldierSkins (do not
include the .u)

Question 4

From: Chris Moody

Hi
i just got unreal tournament, and after playing it for a while decided to have a go at creating a map or two. i've made maps before, but not for unreal. what is there that i can use for making maps? is it unrealed?

thanks for any help you may be able to give me!

regards.

Answer 4

Yes, UnrealEd is the only unreal editor (at the moment, we are awaiting the
release of the Unreal 2 editor and one from Unrealty soon, which should be able to make Unreal
Tournament levels also, but maybe not Unreal?)

You should find the latest version on the second cd of UT, or download it
from http://unreal.epicgames.com in the downloads section (UnrealEd Fix #4)

Good look in making maps. Check out my site for a list of good starting
tutorials.

Question 5

From: Andy Turner

Hi
Dont know if you can help me but im trying to produce spotlight effects in
unrealed and I dont seem to be getting anywhere. I've created a light and
added a spotlight effect in my level but I want the light to shine in a
triangle from its source to the floor texture. I'm trying to create a spot
effect that stands out with darkness all around it.
I hope you understand what I mean as its a bit difficult to explain.

Thanks a lot.

AndyT

Answer 5

You say you have created the spotlight already so I'm not sure what isn't
working but here's a few pointers:

1) To change the direction of a light you need to set bDirectional in the
advanced properties to true. Then the red arrow appears (like for player
starts etc) and you can rotate it to face the correct direction.

2) Try playing around with the LightCone and LightRadius settings. The cone
is the 'width' of the spotlight and the radius is the 'length' of the
spotlight.

3) To make a 'pinpoint' spotlight change the LightBrightness nearer to 255
and the LightCone to nearer 0, e.g. brightness 200 and cone to 20.

I suspect the cause of your problem may well be to large a cone.
Hope this helps you some. If not then get back to me.
