It is best (as adviced by Epic) not to play with these settings unless you really must.

Changing the first slider (Balance Tree) has been known to correct BSP errors in maps sometimes

Clicking on Build will perform all the selected functions, including rebuilding paths.

Create New Path Network will try to place PathNodes in your map by itself. This can be good, and can be bad.

Information on the number of Polygons etc in your level.
